The Love I Knew

I loved you once, the way you were,

So simple, kind and gentle dear.

But now you've changed, you're not the same,

And honestly, it feels not to blame.

If I had seen this new you then,

Believe me, love—I'd not begin.

My heart adored the older you,

This newer you? It won't do.

I search for traces of who you were,

But all I find is a stranger's glare.

My choice could never love this new,

I only long for the you I knew.

God's will, it seems, kept us apart,

Preserving the essence of my heart.

For you don’t deserve this purest love,

A truth that weighs like a mourning dove.

You were right; I loved in vain,

A lesson learned through bittersweet pain.

If we had wed, I'd lose my way,

Sacrificing my soul to seek your stay.

What happens, happens for the best,

This journey has put me to the test.

Hope to free from seeking your embrace,

I'll try to find strength in this empty space.
